ROOTS & SHOOTS

A special coffee supporting
the work of Mori to Dobutsu

This coffee was created to support the Jane Goodall Institute and its youth-led program, Roots & Shoots .

It supports Mori to Dobutsu , an initiative led primarily by two sisters attending elementary and junior high school in Tokyo. Their work helps support school construction and educational opportunities in Zambia.

7 LEVELS ROAST BLEND

One coffee bean,
expressed through seven roast levels

This special blend is made with specialty coffee grown by small-scale farmers in the Kasama region of northeastern Zambia. The same coffee is roasted to seven different levels and then blended together.

While conventional blends combine beans from different origins or farms, this coffee combines a single-origin coffee roasted to different degrees.

SPECIALTY COFFEE

The rich diversity of an origin,
concentrated in a single bean

Specialty coffee refers to exceptionally high-quality coffee and is generally considered to represent approximately the top 5% of coffee distributed worldwide.

High-quality coffee can reveal many different aromas, flavors and expressions depending on whether it is roasted lightly, moderately or deeply.

These complex and layered characteristics seem to reflect the natural environment, the lives of the people and the culture of the region where the coffee was grown.

Specialty coffee

ONE BEAN, MANY EXPRESSIONS

Bringing the full potential
of one bean into one cup

Could the full diversity of an origin, concentrated within a single coffee bean, be expressed completely in one cup?

As one possible answer, we developed a method in which the same coffee is roasted separately from light to dark, before the different roasts are blended together.

Seven-level rainbow roast inspired by the colors of nature

RAINBOW ROAST

A rainbow roast created
with seven roast levels

After repeated testing, we concluded that dividing the coffee into seven roast levels could reproduce the bean’s wide range of aromas and flavors within a single cup.

Just as the colors of nature are often described as seven colors, the aromas and flavors contained within one coffee are revealed through seven different roast expressions.

CRAFTED WITH PURPOSE

Taking the time required
to support a meaningful purpose

Roasting the coffee seven times instead of once requires considerably more time and effort. It is an unusually labor-intensive process and is difficult to adapt to conventional mass distribution.

Even so, we were deeply inspired by the commitment of everyone involved with JGI and Roots & Shoots. We created this coffee in the hope of contributing, even in a small way, to their work.

TASTE OF ZAMBIA

Zambia’s rich diversity,
expressed in one cup

The result is a coffee that expresses the rich and complex diversity of Zambia’s natural environment and culture.

We hope you will enjoy it while imagining the landscapes and the lives of the people in the region where it was grown.

ZAMBIA & KASAMA

The Kasama region of Zambia

Victoria Falls in Zambia

Victoria Falls
Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya,
“The Smoke That Thunders”

Zambia is located in south-central Africa and is blessed with magnificent natural landscapes, including Victoria Falls, one of the world’s great waterfalls.

Zambia is a relatively young coffee-producing country. Large-scale cultivation began during the 1950s, after the Second World War.

COFFEE HISTORY IN AFRICA

From East Africa
to Central Africa

Coffee cultivation in East Africa is said to have begun in the late 19th century, when Christian missionary groups introduced coffee seedlings to Kenya and Tanzania.

Coffee was promoted as a cash crop for local farmers and is thought to have helped support missionary and community activities in the region.

BOURBON HERITAGE

The path of Bourbon coffee
across Africa

The coffee introduced to Kenya and Tanzania came from Réunion Island, formerly known as Bourbon Island, off the coast of Madagascar. The island is the birthplace of the renowned Bourbon variety.

From there, Bourbon coffee spread to Tanzania and Kenya, and later to Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Malawi and Zambia.

Coffee-growing region of Kasama, Zambia

KASAMA REGION

One of Zambia’s earliest
coffee-growing regions

With support from the United Nations and other organizations, coffee cultivation began in northern Zambia’s Kasama region during the 1950s.

Kasama was one of the first regions in Zambia where coffee was cultivated on a significant scale.

IDEAL TERROIR

Fertile soil and
significant temperature differences

Kasama lies along the western branch of the Great Rift Valley, which extends from Uganda and Rwanda toward Malawi.

The surrounding area is known for its exceptionally fertile soil and includes many respected coffee-producing regions.

Its inland location also creates notable differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures, providing favorable conditions for growing Arabica coffee.

RELATED COFFEE

From the forests of Gombe, Tanzania

We also offer a 7 Levels Roast coffee grown in the forests of Gombe near Kigoma, Tanzania, where JGI’s main research activities are based.

A portion of the proceeds is used to support chimpanzee conservation and the protection of the forest ecosystem.
